Why koi ponds need a different liner than a farm pond

A shrimp or fish farming pond cares about one thing: does it hold water without leaking. A koi pond has an extra requirement — the water sits in the same enclosure as expensive, long-lived fish for years, often visible and landscaped. That changes the material question. You're not just buying a pond membrane, you're buying something that has to be chemically inert around fish, resist UV on exposed edges, and stay flexible enough to follow rockwork and waterfall contours without cracking.

HDPE geomembrane is the toughest and cheapest per square meter, and it's fish-safe once it's the smooth (non-textured) grade — this is what most large ornamental and koi ponds use as the base geomembrane pond liner. LLDPE is the more flexible pond liner: lower stiffness, better puncture and stretch performance around irregular shapes, waterfalls, and tight pond edges, which matters more for garden ponds and water feature liners than for a flat farm pond. Fish safety: what "fish-safe" actually means on a spec sheet

Fish-safe isn't a marketing label — it comes down to resin purity. Virgin HDPE and LLDPE resin (no regrind, no unknown recycled content) doesn't leach the plasticizers or heavy metals that some cheap PVC pond liners can. A white pond liner or black liner made from virgin resin is equally safe for fish; color is a cosmetic and thermal choice, not a safety one. Always ask your supplier for a resin certificate before you line a pond that will hold live koi — this is one spec worth pushing back on if the quote doesn't include it.

UV resistance and why exposed liner edges fail first

Most koi pond liner failures don't happen underwater — they happen at the waterline and above, where the liner is exposed to sun. UV-stabilized HDPE and LLDPE include carbon black or UV additives rated for 15-20+ years of continuous outdoor exposure; unstabilized or thin off-brand rolls chalk and crack within a couple of seasons. If your design leaves liner exposed above the waterline (waterfall liner, edge overlaps, bog filter walls), spec the UV-stabilized grade even if the underwater portion could technically use a cheaper one — it's not worth mixing grades to save a small percentage on cost.

Sizing, underlayment, and seaming your liner correctly

Big pond liners and large pond liners are supplied in rolls and can be factory-seamed into one panel to avoid field seams, which is the single biggest leak-prevention step for a koi pond — a factory seam is stronger and more reliable than any pond liner tape or field patch.
